Periauger, Shad boat, and Silver Chalice will arrive at the Edenton waterfront around noon.

18th Century Furniture Display.  This is a rare opportunity to view the Edenton School of furniture, 18th Century specimens from homes in Chowan County, including Hayes Plantation, Beverly Hall, and other local family homes, plus Edenton furniture from the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA).  Over 28 rare pieces will be displayed. A special book describing this exhibit and furniture of the Edenton School will be available for purchase.

Annual Cupola House Association Membership Brunch and Reception.  This is the 90th year of the Association and the kick-off event for the 250th Anniversary celebration.  Families of the founding members will be recognized.  There will be honored guests, preservationist friends, and dignitaries.

“Elizabeth II Sailing Ship” arrives from Manteo around 4 pm on September 28th and will be available for on-board tours throughout the week.  This event will appeal to everyone.

History Panel. Multi-faceted presentations portraying Edenton as it was in 1758, providing an overview history of the Albemarle Sound and Edenton as a port city, the Colonial Capital of NC; when church and state were one.  The life of a colonist and survival in a new land where waterfront commerce made Edenton a hub of activity will be the focus with topics and presenters as follows:

  • Saving the Cupola House. Find out how this architectural treasure was saved by local citizens.  Local author will share their perspectives on the formation of the 90 year old association featuring "Deliverance of a Treasure" by Mary Anne Coffey and Murphy Moss
  • Medicine, Dr. Lei Devine
  • St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Anne Edwards
  • The Port, an Economic Engine of the Region, Paul Fontenoy, Curator of Maritime Research & Technology at the NC Maritime Museum

3-5 pm Early Music of Eastern North Carolina. Lecture and demonstrations of 18th Century music and instruments.   A harpsichord demonstration will be given by Linda Thornton, and a special recorder demonstration and concert will be given by The Renaissance Consort.

Artwork commemorating the 250th Cupola House Anniversary will be displayed and informative sessions will be focused on 18th Century Arts and Crafts.  Sponsored by Chowan Arts Council.

Cupola House Garden Plant Sale, Garden Tour, and Lectures Focused on 18th Century

1-5 pm
18th Century Period Plant and Book Sale.  Plants that could have been grown in Edenton at the time as well as native plants will be featured.
1:30-3 pm
Landscaping with 18th Century Heirloom Plants. Lecture by Gordon Chappell, Director of Landscape, Colonial Williamsburg and Past-President of Southern Garden History Society.
3-4 pm
Tour and History of the Cupola House Gardens. Master Gardeners, Frances Inglis and Mary Kay Coyle, will escort you through this famous garden as they highlight colonial era herbs, flowers, and trees.  The vegetable garden at the back and the formal garden in the front have been restored with the Sauthier map of 1769 as a guide. Booklet with plants and flowers identified and photographed will be available for purchase.

Lectures, Guided Tour, and Book Signing *

Lecture on Furniture of the Chesapeake, 1680-1830 by Ron Hurst, Colonial Williamsburg.  Describing the influence that English designs had on development of Colonial furniture.
2–3:30 pm
Lecture on Furniture of Eastern North Carolina by Robert Leath, MESDA. The Colonists' heritage and available materials in the region resulted in development of a unique style.

The types of furniture featured in these lectures are on display at the Library all week and a book specifically featuring the Edenton School of furniture (three pieces of the Edenton Carved School are especially noteworthy) is available for purchase during these lectures and at the Barker House. This tradition of furniture making still exists today...250 years later!

3:30-5 pm
Pieces of the Edenton School of Furniture. Thomas R. J. Newbern and James R. Melchor, authors of newly published, “Edenton Furniture and Culture – Colonial and Federal Periods” which specifically features unique cabinetmaking that produced some of the finest carved furniture with late Baroque characteristics made in the South. The book examines this furniture group as well as the events and influences that led to its creation. Book signing will follow the tour.

National Architectural Trends from the Colonial Period through Post-Revolution Period. Including the influence and adoption of British forms to American design, presented by Scott Power, Director of the Eastern Regional Office of the NC Department of Archives and History.

The Cupola House History Tour and Its 18th Century Collections.

In-depth guided tour of the Cupola House and rare colonial artifacts.  Limited to 20 people per time slot.

Preservation of 18th Century Costumes and Textiles. Rare glimpse of artifacts, exquisite dresses, and textiles from the Cupola House collection.  A decorative gown of rich brocade, was last worn by Tillie Bond in 1908, celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Cupola House.  This gown, made for previous inhabitant, Elizabeth Dickinson, is over 200 years old and will be featured and displayed.  An informative lecture will be conducted.

National Trust Advisory Council will visit various historic sites with the emphasis on the Cupola House and its unique architecture.  The 90 year-old Cupola House Association will be featured as an exemplary example of preservation organizations for North Carolina and the nation.
